Let’s Grow Together!
Growing peas shoots is helpful in understanding the magic of germination and plant development.
Farmers are scientists.
They observe, hypothesis, and experiment as they seek to grow strong, healthy plants and animals. Use your power of observation to guide your shoots to grow healthy and strong.
As you observe the seed germinate you’ll notice the development of the plant. First, the radicle (the little tail) begins to pull away from the seed. It will look for moisture in the soil and become the roots. Shortly after, the epicotyl will reveal itself from the same area of the seed. Instead of looking for water the epicotyl will reach for sunlight. This portion of the seed will develop into the stem and leaves of the plant. The pea will continue to grow and will soon begin the process of photosynthesis. On our farm we harvest the shoots after about 16 days from planting. They are great to eat just by themselves. Use the handout to follow the steps and remember to…
Observe
Watch each day as the pea continues to develop. Where do the new leaves grow from? Do they reach for the sun or are they hot and wilted?
Do the roots shrivel up because they need to be watered or brown because of too much water? Are they bright white, indicating the right balance of moisture and oxygen for healthy plant growth?
Share
Harvest the shoots and share them with someone special.
If you’d like to share your experience with us we’d love to hear from you! You’re welcome to email, tag or message us on social (insta: @downtoearthharvest).

Visit a Farm and ask a Farmer how they use the scientific method to better understand the interaction between plants, animals, and their farm.
Get dirty… plant a seed, a flower, or a garden with someone you like spending time with. It is a great way to be creative, work together, and grow something beautiful!
